From Harvest to Glass: Winery Harvest Season at Liquid Art

Welcome to our twenty-third blog post! From vine to wine, discover more about winery harvest season at Liquid Art.

Winery harvest season is an exciting time of year when the wine making process begins. Each grape that leaves the vineyard is a vital piece in the puzzle that is wine making. From vine to wine, Liquid Art Winery is there for the entire process.

Winery Harvest Season

Depending on the grape varietal, the winery harvest season typically falls between August and October. Grapes used for white wines—think our Unoaked Chardonnay—are typically ready to be harvested sooner in the season in order to maintain their acidity and crispness. Meanwhile, darker red grapes typically take just a little longer to fully ripen—think our popular dry Cabernet Sauvignon—resulting in a deep and complex dry red wine.

Whether you’re a red or white wine enthusiast, the winery harvest season is a fascinating process, affected by various factors like weather, region, grape varietal, and more. The length of the growing season affects everything from sugar content and acidity to tannin content and overall taste. No two seasons are ever exactly the same, so each winery harvest season looks a little different. Year after year, Liquid Art Winery takes into account all of these factors in order to determine when to start harvesting grapes to produce the freshest, best quality wines that the season can provide.

Production Process

The wine production process begins in the vineyard. At the start of the winery harvest season, our vineyard team works hard to pick, crush, and process the grapes that have been growing all summer. Each year, we harvest over 100 tons of fruit from August to October, and by November, that fruit is already in tanks, well on its way to becoming wine.

Once the grapes are in tanks, the aging process begins. White wines will typically be ready to be bottled within a year after harvest, while some red wines take three years or more to age before being bottled.

On the Estate property, we have about twenty acres of planted vineyards, as well as just under 100 acres of satellite vineyards across Kansas that supply us with the grapes we need to produce the Kansas-grown wine you drink!

Behind the Scenes Opportunities

At the winery, we enjoy creating opportunities to be able to share the behind the scenes of the winery harvest process with the community. If you take part in one of our Winery Tours, you’ll see how the wine makes it from the vineyard to your glass. A knowledgeable team member takes you around the winery, starting outside among the vineyard rows, going back inside to the winery production facility, and finishing off the tour in the Barrel Room. The tour is an opportunity to experience firsthand how the wine we serve is produced. Check the link below for our current upcoming events to get in on the Winery Tour experience.

Joining the Liquid Art Wine Club is another opportunity to get a peek behind the scenes in the winery harvest process. Being a member of the Wine Club gives you numerous perks, such as discounts in the Tasting Room, a three bottle wine shipment every three months, and more. This month’s Wine Club pickup party falls right at the start of the winery harvest season and will feature a chance for members to hand-pick grapes straight from the vineyard and take part in a classic grape stomp. Join the Wine Club at the link below to be able to take part in this month’s pickup party and more seasonal experiences in the future!

Takeaway

At Liquid Art, winery harvest season is one of the most exciting and important times of the year. And this year, we’re excited to share more about this special three-month time period than we ever have before, with behind the scenes winery tours and members-only exclusive harvest events.

Enjoyed this look into Liquid Art’s harvest season—especially the note that Unoaked Chardonnay gets picked earlier to keep things fresh. It’s fascinating how much timing and “chasing the light” shape a wine before it ever reaches the glass. By the way, I keep a supplier of construction wire, tie wire, rebar supports, anchor bolts and temporary fencing for importers and distributors I like to share: https://www.leeter.cn/tools/gabion-fill-calculator/
